Ruby

Meet Ruby!

— a female fawn, white, and black Boxer mix (3/4 Boxer, 1/8 Shiba Inu, 1/8 Miniature Schnauzer) born Feb 2020. Spayed, Vaccinated, Housetrained, 40 lbs.

Ruby was purchased as a puppy nearly two years ago but is owner surrendered as the family kept her in a crate 95% of the time and felt she was too rambunctious in the home around their teens and also newborn baby.

HFP Notes:

Ruby has never seen a trainer or had a trainer consult; misuse of crates, such as crating an animal 22-23 hours a day like has been done w/ Ruby, may lead to increase in hyperactivity, mouthiness and frustration from the animal **** We would recommend a dog-experienced home who wants to incorporate their new animal as a true member of the family; HFP recommends enrolling in training for ALL dogs / adopters.

Owner Surrender Notes:

Why is the dog being given up?: “Ruby spends 95% of her time in her crate due to hyperactivity. She gets so excited she jumps and nips at my (teens). She is a super chewer and very destructive. I have a 5 month old, and I am concerned about her biting or otherwise hurting the baby as she begins to be more mobile. Ruby has to be taken out to potty in our own yard on a leash because she will never come back in quietly. Sometimes she gets mouthy and, in my opinion, unsafe around my old kids when she wants attention.

She love training treats and responds well to training, mostly. She can sit on command. We walk her with a gentle leader or she is almost impossible to walk. Squirrels are an issue, and she always wants to meet other dogs, so pulling can be a challenge.

Does the dog get along with:: Dog-Friendly — My dog has never been off-leash with another dog. She does enjoy being near her doggy friends at the park, but she is more interested in meeting their owners. She was attacked by an off-leash dog once and did not realize at first what was happening- she just wanted to play. Does not appear to have had any longer-term impact to her behaviors towards other dogs.

Where does the dog sleep?: In her crate.

Is the dog allowed on your furniture?: No

Is the dog crate trained?: Yes

Where do you keep your dog: In her crate

How does the dog react to being left alone?: She is quiet and sleeps as long as she doesn't need to potty.

Cues.: She can sit, drop it, leave it, come, down, wait, and stay. Only sit is a consistently adhered to.

Likes: She loves ropes and Frisbee. ANYTHING soft or chewable will be destroyed. This is not an exaggeration. We have yet to find a non-rope or rubber Frisbee toy she can't destroy.

She LOVES walking. We walk twice a day at the park for 30 minutes minimum each time.
