Maggie

Miss Maggie  -- In Need of Foster or Adopter (Sac)

Meet Maggie - Maggie is a spayed, 85 lb. German Shepherd, 7-8 years of age.

Maggie was adopted 3 years ago from Hearts for Paws but is now in need of a new home. They describe her as "happy-go lucky" and loving!

Adopter's Notes:

How long have you owned this dog?: 3 years

Why is the dog being given up?: Her night time anxiety behavior is difficult to manage and keeps us awake about 4-5 days a week.

More About Maggie: She loves soft squeaky toys and small cozy areas to help her feel safe. (not a crate) She likes to check in with you and be acknowledged.

Please list medications your dog is taking:: Paxil and Trazadone

Is your dog housebroken?: Yes

Are there any behavior problems?: Most Recent Anxiety, particularly at night. She pants and paces around the house, whining and not able to settle. She'll lay down for a few seconds, startle and start pacing again. She will scratch at doors. (We put little socks on her.)

-Sensitivity to noise such as rain and thunder, and explosive sounds. She becomes frightened and seeks out hiding spaces. She has knocked over a lamp and small side tables. Clawed at doors. All trying to escape the noise. We put her on a leash to keep her nearby and safe. She can be protective of our current dog.

Dogs? She went to a training center where she was with other dogs, but she mostly kept to herself. Not leash reactive. She loves our current dog.

Kids? Have not seen her extensively around kiddos but believe she would do well with respectful children (who would not climb on her)

How is your dog meeting strangers?: She likes to be ignored and will then soon sniff the stranger and is fine. She doesn't like them to pet her from above until she is comfortable.

Where does the dog sleep?: on a dog bed in our bedroom,

Is the dog allowed on your furniture?: Yes

Where do you keep your dog: Free roam in the house

How does the dog react to being left alone?: Seems to be fine. No destruction and is happy to see us. She has another dog with her.

Maggie previously received a Femoral Head Ostectomy surgery due to hip dysplasia. Needs a boost to get into the car, can't jump, or run much.

Does the dog like riding in the car?: Yes

What is the dog's favorite : Squeaky toys! Loves to ride in the car! She is really about people and wants to be near them, acknowledged and be pet.

What does the dog like?: Her people. Her dog roommate. Hanging out outside for awhile and rolling in the grass. Eating. She's pretty happy go lucky.

Does the dog jump kiddie gates or fences?: No

If yes, how high is the dog able to jump?: Not at all. She sort of scrambles up to get onto the couch.

Is the dog a digger?: No

"She is such a good girl! She is sweet and affectionate. If she ever gets into anything you don't want her to, tell her and she won't do it. (She chewed up a shoe once. I let her know that I didn't like that, and we've never had a problem again.) She has a great smile and is just adorable!
She likes to put her paw up on you to get your attention if she wants to say hello. She "talks." Her ears are so beautiful when she's listening. She gets that German Shepherd look and stands up so proudly. Love it. She sometimes puts squeaky stuffed toys all in a group and in a safe place and then checks on them periodically.

Please provide a summary of the “ideal” home for your dog:: People or a person who love on her and are patient with her fears. Also sensitive to what she can and can't do with her hip, and exercise her to keep her muscles strong to support that left leg. Someone who will give her "babies"- squeaky stuffed toys.

Maggie needs a foster, foster to adopt, or adoptive home! Vetted, spayed, vaccinated, treated with monthly preventatives. $150 training/behaviorist reimbursement available with proof.
