Hippo

Meet Hippo! A spunky, energetic pup who is 7 years young!

We know he is cute but he really needs the RIGHT HOME! Please read his full bio to help determine if that might be YOU:

Hippo landed at the Solano County shelter as a matted stray so we do no know much about his past.

— Very playful, moderate energy — needs 2-3 walks a day including a longer walk.

— Walks well on leash, crate trained housetrained

— Excitable around other dogs

—- Handling / behavioral sensitivities requires an adult only, dog-savvy home

Unfortunately, Hippo landed a bite in his last home during a training session that broke skin and was unprovoked. He knew he had “done bad” and put himself in his crate. The last adopter no longer felt comfortable keeping him because of the unpredictability of the bite, but luckily, his adoring foster wanted to take him back to make sure he was kept safe while we find him a different forever home.

Hippo has growled if pushed off furniture so we have removed that privilege for him. Instead of being grabbed and picked up he should instead be lured with either treats or leash. It’s important for his new home to understand his ability to bite again, although he has not since.

The ideal home for Hippo is 1-2 adults who will be very consistent with rules and boundaries (no couch or bed privileges), respectful/understanding of handling sensitivities/bite history, continue with his crate training.

Hippo needs a person who really understands his need for help and proper placement, the kind of home looking to help the animal as much as find an animal who will help them!

Anyone with a fitness goal or an active lifestyle would get a perfect walking buddy in return! The ideal day would consist of 2-3 long walks and nap time in between.

He is dog friendly and loves other dogs but can be over excited meeting them, although has played well/appropriately with some.
