Here is what her foster has to say about a typical day in the life with Sammie:
“Our typical day is that she gets me up sometime between 6-6:30 and get go out into the backyard so she can check things out. Then she has breakfast and we hang out in the backyard a little longer.
Sometime in mid-morning we take a walk before it gets too warm. After that, she takes a nap in her dog bed next to me while I'm working. At lunchtime we do a training session and then she snoozes again.
She has a funny personality. Now that it's warm out, she refuses to go in the backyard until the evening. If I try to entice her out, she will run back to her dog bed and give me puppy eyes. She'll still go out for a walk or a car ride & rides great in the car!
In the evening, she gets her second wind, so she gets dinner with another training session and then we go on a long walk around dusk. After that, she likes another nap.
Later in the evening, she likes to go back into the backyard to do some patrolling. At bedtime, she gets a greenies and then goes back to sleep. She does do some patrolling of the house at night. I have the windows open, so she's tuned into all the outdoor sounds.
All in all, she's very mellow. She's very content napping all day. She's perfect in the house. The only issue I've had is when she's found food left in a too tempting spot when I'm asleep. I consider that my fault! She doesn't counter surf and doesn't beg, although she will hang out next to me while eating...just in case.
She loves her walks, and her stamina has been improving. She's still a chunky girl, so she gets hot very quickly. Some days I have problems with her pulling on the leash, but she's been great on her last two walks.
She goes into her crate occasionally and I always give her greenies in there, so she runs to her crate when she thinks she's getting a crate. If I don't move her dog bed into the living room when I'm in there, she'll hang out in the crate, but she's usually on her dog bed or on the tile floor when she's particularly warm. I move her bed into my room at night and she sleeps there.
All in all, she's been wonderful and really easy, other than the occasional confrontation with dogs during our walks.”
Sammie Girl is a SWEET, people and kid-friendly, German Shepherd looking for a forever home. She is loving, loyal and eager to please.
Sammie originally came to use from the Modesto shelter where she was set to be euthanized on Christmas Eve! She was a stray so we don’t know her history, but our guess was she was owned by someone who most likely kept her in the backyard her whole life.
The ideal home for Sammie is w/ GSD savvy people. She would make a wonderful companion to a recently retired couple looking for a loyal friend. Sammie should be an only dog in the home. She can sometimes bark and react to passing dogs, but is correctable with a dog-savvy handler. She would do best in a quiet neighborhood/setting. A long walk everyday during quieter traffic hours would be the perfect start or end to the day for Sammie.
CRATE TRAINED (she will go in when she is bored or tired), HOUSETRAINED, GREAT IN THE CAR. Sammie knows sit and wait commands and has been through a local board and train program.
5 yrs, 70 lbs, spayed, vaccinated, chipped, heart worm tested, and up to date on monthly preventatives. $125 adoption donation.
