Monty

Meet Monty! Monty is 9-10 month mixed mutt Rescued from Fresno SPCA as a stray so we don't know much about his life prior

Monty is about 58 lbs and may grow to to 65-70 lbs.

Monty is already amazing in so many ways: Loving to people he knows, very well-behaved, knows basic commands (sit, down, shake), treat motivated, eager to please, no food aggression, travels well in the car, walks well on leash, loves other dogs, fine being left alone without complaint.

However, Monty needs a VERY specific and VERY special home due to stress triggers / fear-based aggression with NEW people.

Interestingly, Monty has done well meeting new people on our ranch when he is off-leash and able to “escape” as he sees it. He is either indifferent to people or will greet them quickly with loose body tail wags and then quickly move on. Out and about in the community off leash he is neutral to people and non-reactive in general (although VERY interested in squirrels and birds… the hound mix in him we think!)

When extending a meeting w/ a new person, and/or having Monty on leash, he has growled, snarled and lunged at multiple people unprovoked if they acknowledge him. The trainers assessment is that this reactivity/wariness of people is specifically if he feels trapped or the interaction is forced. We are currently working on muzzle training, place command, look command, and sit. If ignored, even when he’s on leash Monty is fine.

This will require an owner who is very aware of the situations they place Monty in and ability to manage people’s interactions (please do not pet my dog); putting him away when people come over. There are so so many wonderful, easy things about Monty that we are very hopeful to find the perfect understanding, capable and skilled adopters to help him. Monty is also able to bond with/love multiple people and lives in a home with three adults + multiple dogs. The dogs help Monty very very much. He would do best in a home with 1-2+ dogs for this reason. No resource guarding of food, treats, toys against dogs in the home!
