Meet Kodi!
55lb neutered 1/2 lab, 1/2 cattle dog (per DNA Test) estimated 3 years.
Kodi has a long story with unfortunate events that landed him back in HFP care — but we are SO SO glad this amazing dog is back with us and we are committed to finding him the perfect home going forward!
About Kodi:
Kodi is a fun, happy, active dog with an impressive resume of training under his belt. He will make a wonderful adventure dog BFF to the right person! He LOVES the beach, hikes, water, travels amazing in the car, happy to go to new places, and can settle in the home when it’s time for you to work.
Sometimes Kodi acts like a “full on lab” other times he very much acts like a “full on cattle dog” but most of the time he he acts very 50/50— which is a funny and endearing personality for a dog to have! Happy-go-lucky personality, LOVES water and balls (like a lab), but at the same time has some strong instincts towards sudden movements & a tendency to use his mouth (like a cattle dog) + the smarts and athleticism of a cattle dog, and the loyalty of a cattle dog too!
Kodi has received professional training w/ KoruK9 in SF. He knows the following cues: Sit, Down, Shake, Spin, Look, Leave It, Heal. Kodi’s recall is ON POINT! He is highly treat motivated making him a very trainable dog.
He also knows the "Place" command.
In general, if we want to initiate training, we say "Kodi, ready to work" and he immediately sits and pays close attention. Once training is over and we want to give him freedom to do as he'd like we say "free."
Kodi displays herding breed tendencies towards fast motions that can include hands while being pet and children running. For this reason he should go to a home without kids as his instinct to herd and go towards these movemens would not work.
He can nip at hands when he’s excited to see people and being pet or over aroused (again a herding instinct). This behavior is not aggressive - it comes from a place of being overly excited and stimulated- but his nips can sometimes hurt and leave marks. Typically, he stops with a firm and assertive NO. We also use "Place" command to have him go to his "Place" and calm down, which has been effective.
Kodi’s new owner needs to advocate for him and guide interaction between Kodi and new people (new people can give him a treat, but should not immediately smother him with love). Once he knows you he is very happy for affection.
How does the dog react to being left alone?: He seems to be fine. I do give him a filled Kong to give him something to do while I'm leaving and keep him occupied for the first 10-15 minutes that I'm gone. I have a camera to see what he's doing and he usually is just sitting or laying on the couch and really just stays there almost the entire time until I get back
Does the dog like riding in the car?: Yes
Favorite things : He likes his orange rubber ball in the house and plays mini games of fetch in the house (outside, he loves to chase the ball, but does not bring it back). And he likes to play with his tug ropes. He also has a Benebone that he likes to chew.
His favorite activity is playing with his close dog friends and he does this at a nearby park — he also likes to just be outside.
He also likes just being with his people. At night he loves to cuddle.
Lastly, he LOVES the beach and playing in the waves and fetching rubber toys in the water.
What does the dog like?: He likes other dogs (especially his dog friends that he knows!!). And he likes his owners and owners friends who Kodi knows (he seems to remember people when seeing them a second or third time and gets excited to see them again). Kodi also likes squirrels. And he LOVES the beach - he loves to jump in the waves and fetch a ball or other toy. One of his favorite games is chase! He just loves when we chase him around the yard.
Does the dog jump kiddie gates or fences?: No
If yes, how high is the dog able to jump?: Kodi can jump quite high, but he's never jumped over a fence or a "baby gate" I have in the home.
Kodi is such a sweetheart! He genuinely smiles and is so full of life. He's affectionate, playful, and an absolute joy to watch play with his friends. When he's running free or playing with other dogs (or us), he's just as happy as can be. Before bed and in the mornings, he loves to snuggle and he's the type of dog that will lean in to you as you adore him. He's also super smart and curious. When he's experiencing a new sound, he tips his head to the left or right (so cute!).
Ideal home: Kodi would be a great dog for an individual or couple that does not have young kids in the home; dog experience and is committed to continued training; physically active people that enjoy being active and playful with a dog. And even better if the person has a big yard for Kodi to run in and have play dates with dog friends!
